Warm and Cool Hands-- Third Grade Art

Third grade used warm and cool colors and pattern to create these tempera paintings. The students viewed artwork by native people and how their hand print was not only a record of who they were or where they had traveled, but also a way to sign their art. The students each used their hand prints to sign their paintings. Notice how the warm colors (red, orange, and yellow) advance and the cool colors (blue, green, and violet) recede? This color effect creates an optical illusion. The boys and…

"My dream is to be a shark expert." Some projects are solid, work every time, and are a major part of the cornerstone of what you do as an Art teacher. This project is like that for me. Every year I’ve taught elementary, I have taught this project. It encompasses several different techniques and objectives, students love it, and the results are beautiful. I was inspired to create the project after doing one too many cutesy warm/cool projects with my younger students. I realized that my…

Wilkinson's Wonderful World of Art: Grade - Triangular Design Color Wheels adding shade and tint concepts to color wheel.

5th Grade - Triangular Design Color Wheels

5th graders reviewed the color wheel, and with this, made a 6-color color wheel. However, instead of just mixing colors and painting them in a circle, they created a line/shape design inside of a triangle template I gave them. This design was then traced onto tracing paper and copied onto the larger white paper 6 times using the graphite transfer technique. To do this, students colored the back of their design on the tracing paper with a graphite stick. They then turned it back around and…

Warm/Cool Watercolour Grid

This is a watercolour project I recently taught to a Grade 8 class. It is useful for reviewing warm and cool colours as well as for learning how to use watercolours in a controlled way. Here's how we made these: First, students measured a grid onto their white paper- I think I encouraged a 3cm size square, but to accomodate students who need more help, they can use a larger size. Some students chose to go smaller. So measure out the lines with a ruler in one direction.... Then the same size…
