Thiva (Thebes), the birthplace of Hercules and Dionysos, was a powerful city-state in 400 BC during Greece’s golden age, occupying a strategic position between northern Greece and the Peloponnese. The tragic fate of its royal dynasty, centred on the myth of Oedipus, rivalled that of ancient Mycenae. Present-day Thiva has few vestiges of its past glory, except those that can be viewed within the Archaeological Museum.
The Thebans. Their Sacred Band was one of the premiere fighting groups in all of Greece. Thebes was a bitter enemy of Athens for most of its history, but at times would be at odds with Sparta. Shockingly, in 371 BC, the Thebans, led by the great General Epaminondas, defeated the Spartans at the Battle of Leuktra. This would usher in the decline of Spartan power and prestige.
