Lion monument to the Sacred Band of Thebes, most of whom probably died in the Battle of Chaeronea in 338 BC. This military force, the elite of the Theban army, consisted of 150 sets of male lovers. At Chaeronea, they held their ground, and nearly all fell where they stood, as it was observed at the time, "heaped one upon another." The lion, erected 40 years later, was always thought to stand at the battle's site, and when excavated in 1890, revealed 254 skeletons, arranged in rows.

Thiva (Thebes), the birthplace of Hercules and Dionysos, was a powerful city-state in 400 BC during Greece’s golden age, occupying a strategic position between northern Greece and the Peloponnese. The tragic fate of its royal dynasty, centred on the myth of Oedipus, rivalled that of ancient Mycenae. Present-day Thiva has few vestiges of its past glory, except those that can be viewed within the Archaeological Museum.

The Thebans. Their Sacred Band was one of the premiere fighting groups in all of Greece. Thebes was a bitter enemy of Athens for most of its history, but at times would be at odds with Sparta. Shockingly, in 371 BC, the Thebans, led by the great General Epaminondas, defeated the Spartans at the Battle of Leuktra. This would usher in the decline of Spartan power and prestige.
