Located under staircase in back of hall is paneled alcove w built-in benches flanking a fireplace-the inglenook which appeared in American homes in 1870s &became common to entrance halls in fashionable houses. This cozy, intimate space softened the formality of the hall as a waiting area for visitors, made it conducive to use as a living room.
