“I’d rather die than retire,” Johnny Cash told Rolling Stone in November 2002.  “Like a shark — got to keep moving.”  This portrait, taken in Cash’s home by Martin Schoeller, captures the fierce optimism of The Man in Black, who passed away eleven months later. It’s as honest a portrait as I’ve seen, and somehow, lurking in the wrinkles and lines and cloudy eyes, there’s a great amount of humanity and humor still burning strong. That’s Cash.”
