Idyllic Loweswater

Time to visit another one of those puddles in the hills, otherwise known as ‘The Lakes’. This one is a particularly idyllic lake called Loweswater and we should be able to walk all around it in a couple of hours. There’s a country lane down one side, a woodland trail along the other, and farmland at either end. So, we’ll start midway down the lane and head for the south eastern end. Not so many flowers along the roadside at this time of year, a few Red Campion and the odd DYC (a botanical…

Fell Walking For Wimps 1 - Slate Fell

Twenty years or so ago, if I saw a hill, I felt an irresistible urge to climb it. Now, older and wiser, I have come to realise that majestic mountains and fabulous fells look at their most majestic and fabulous when they’re towering above you. True, when you get to the top, the views can be breathtaking, but these days, by the time I get to the top, I’ve not got a lot of breath left to take. Which is why I’ve decided to introduce the idea of Fell Walking For Wimps. No-one else appears to…

Sardinian Warbler, Sylvia melanocephala If all goes as planned, I shall be leaving Crete, for an extended stay in the UK, in two weeks time. During my 16 years on the island, I have uploaded 3,595 observations to the iNaturalist world database of life on this planet, covering 1,276 species. This includes 116 different species of bird, and choosing a favourite is difficult. For a start, I’m not particularly a ‘birdie’ person. I love to see and hear them, but I don’t go into raptures over a…

Kapsa Gorge

Samaria Gorge is the ‘must do’ Cretan Gorge on every tourist’s check list. Great, it really is spectacular, but so are most of the hundreds of gorges on Crete, they just don’t have the marketing behind them. One of these is Perivolakia Gorge, the head of which, we visited back in December 2017. It is also known as Kapsa Gorge on account of the monastery of that name, perched on the eastern flank. It was to here that botanist Steve Lenton and I decided to make our first post lockdown foray…
