"Give Me Five" Freebie

Thanks to everyone who left a comment or sent a note about yesterday's post. My dad is doing great and he's even got enough spunk to subject the cute young nurses to his horrible jokes! Thanks also for the amazing ideas for my name wall. I've gone from having no inspiring ideas to having way too many! I'm heading into school tomorrow for the first time this summer, so I'm going to visualize my options and ponder when I get there. I think I'm leaning towards jeeps or sailboats but I'll keep…

Behavior Charts....here's what I'm going to try!

If you saw my post a few weeks ago about Behavior Charts you'll know I was questioning the use of my "normal" behavior chart in my classroom. (http://inspiredbykindergarten.blogspot.com/2012/07/behavior-charts-advicecomments-welcome.html) There were 2 main reasons I started to question "The chart": (#1) I would want to talk to kids about their choices 2 hours after it happened (while they were missing their recess) and I couldn't remember what they had done to get their picture moved to…

Some Randomness!

Here are some random ideas from the past few weeks.... So, I have a REALLY challenging bunch of firsties. Lots of behaviour issues, so we spend a lot of time practicing behaviours and expectations. One thing we did this week is talk about being a good listener. I read this book: Then I showed the students this picture of a student. I got the clipart from here, put the image on my projector, and traced/coloured it. I asked the students what they noticed about this boy and how was he being a…

Whole Brain Teaching-ish Rules :)

As many of you know, I use different rules in my classroom than the standard five from Whole Brain Teaching. Their rules are: Follow directions quickly Raise your hand for permission to speak. Raise your hand for permission to leave your seat. Make smart choices. Keep your dear teacher happy. These rules seem a-ok and I really like how they cover the spectrum of possibilities that students can throw in our direction! However, I am head-over-heals in love with the class rules Ashley from The…

Howdy! I am Mr. Greg from The Kindergarten Smorgasboard. My real name is Greg Smedley-Warren. I have been teaching for 11 years. I spent a year teaching fifth grade, two years in second grade and am now in my 9th year in Kindergarten. Kindergarten is my passion and my calling but honestly, that wasn’t how it started. When I was moved to Kindergarten (not voluntarily!) I called my mommy and cried. But on the first day, I fell in love and knew that Kindergarten is where I belonged. I have…

Classroom Rules (I survived Week 1!)

Oh am I ever-so-thankful that we are into our 2nd week of school. I love my new little friends! They are a quiet bunch with such wonderful manners. I usually have crazy dreams about my class leading up to the 1st day of school, but I didn't have any this year. Perhaps the jitters of beginning a new school year disappear once you reach a milestone in your teaching career. The BIGGEST thing I reinforced this week were the Classroom Rules. We use PBIS, which I have mentioned before. Every class…
