Chernobyl. Soviet Union. In 1986 its nuclear power plant reactor #4 melted down & exploded, raining down radiation for 10 days. 350,000 people were removed from 1,938,100 acres of land. Called "the exclusion zone," wildlife & birds died, as well as a 4,000 acre pine forest. In the following decades, despite very high radiation levels & mutations, animals thrive with the return of marshes and the original forests, including wolves. This area has become an unintentional sanctuary.

A victim of the Chernobyl nuclear disaster in a Kiev burn center in July 1986. The explosion released about 400 times more radiation than the U.S. atomic bomb dropped over Hiroshima. Hundreds of thousands were sickened and once-pristine forests and farmland remain contaminated.
