Constantine moved Roman Empire capital to Byzantium/Constantinople. Byzantine style becomes discernible within Early Christian art as early as the beginning of the 5th century, soon after the effective division of the Empire. During the reign of Justinian in 527-565 A.D., Byzantium/Constantinople (Istanbul, Turkey) reasserted its political dominance over the West - became undisputed artistic capital. Justinian was an art patron.

2ND GOLDEN AGE - ARCHITECTURE: INTERIOR OF THE KATHOLIKON - HOSIOS LOUKAS - Tall, narrow compartments produce a sense of crowdedness - pool of space beneath the dome. Dome rests on a cylindrical drum with tall windows which raises it high above the rest of the building. The vertical impact is striking when entering the church - glows with mosaic decoration.
