The vampire squid (Vampyroteuthis infernalis) is a small cephalopod found throughout temperate & tropical oceans in extreme deep sea conditions. Unique retractile sensory filaments justify placement in its own order, Vampyromorphida, as it shares similarities with both octopuses and squid.

The Great Blue Hole, roughly 40 miles off the Belize coast, is the largest sinkhole in the world measuring 984 ft across & about 400 ft deep. Jacques Cousteau put it on the map when he first explored its depths in 1971. It's thought to have once been a giant cave on dry land thousands of years ago & is now part of the wider Belize Barrier Reef Reserve System, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The Blue Hole has never been fully mapped & its exact features remain mostly unknown.

A blanket octopus (genus Tremoctopus), photo taken in Dagatan, Calabarzon, Philippines. Blanket octopi are immune to the venomous tentacles of the Portuguese man o' war, which they tear off & use for offensive & defensive purposes. They also spread their webbed tentacles to appear larger, to intimidate threats & predators.
