Young Saint Cosmas (14th cent) secretly fled to avoid marriage & entered Zographou Monastery. As ecclesiarch, he was granted to see the MostHoly Mother of God, and heard The Lord say he should withdraw into the wilderness. This he did. Shortly before dying, the Lord told him devils would assault him physically. He was beaten fiercely by demons, communed, and died. Many beasts and birds flocked to his cave and let out cries when he was buried. When exhumed, his body wasn't found. (Sept 22)

Athanasius of Athos aka Athanasios of Trebizond was a monk who founded the monastic community on Mount Athos, which has since evolved into the greatest center of Orthodox Christian monasticism. Athanasius was made worthy to see the Mother of God who miraculously brought forth water from a rock and promised that she would also be the abbess [Ikonomisa, the one in charge of the provisions of the monastery]
