This byzantine silk is dated from 9th-10th century and was based on a Sassanian original. The pictured fragment can be found in Museo Nazionale in Italy, Ravenna.    A lion was a common symbol used by dukes and counts in the Middleages but also by emirs and ranked governers of Ancient Empires in Near East.
