Combs. Wood. Similar to most ancient combs, these combs are two-sided. One side has closely-spaced teeth for straightening the hair, and the other side provides even more teeth for delousing the scalp. First century B.C.E. Because of unusually arid climatic conditions at Qumran, many wooden objects were retrieved including bowls, boxes, mirror frames, and combs. Courtesy of the Israel Antiquities Authority

Erfurt: Frühe Runen auf altem Kamm
West German deer-antler comb, c. 300 AD. Runic script was on the comb's handle before it was laid in a sacrificial pit 1700 years ago in what is now the Erfurt Frienstedt district. The runic text reads "kaba," now kamm (comb) in German. The inscription is 250 years older than the earliest known objects with runic script found in Germany. This comb proved that there was a very early runic tradition in West Germany, and early runic inscriptions did not necessarily have to come from Scandinavia.
