Stereotyping

The most Moroccan criminality is due to the hashish business. People outside of Morocco think that most of the Moroccans are dealing with hashish due to the fact that a place in Morocco consists only of hashish plants. Moroccans being criminals and dealing with hashish can be linked to each other and give a stereotype about the Moroccan society as a whole, which is really dissapointing in the eyes of the Moroccans.

If you ask people what a typical Moroccan dish is, they will automatically answer 'cous cous'. People often think that Moroccans don't eat something else than cous cous. This is the same sterotype as thinking that the Dutch always eat cheese.

Lately everyone thinks that every Moroccan smokes shisha and always hangs out in a shisha lounge. Since shisha became very popular all over the world, you almost everywhere see that the owners of those shisha lounges are Moroccan. This is a sterotype, because people see something and again believe that it's a culture and not something that depends on every persons interests.

Criminality is often linked to the Moroccan society, especially the youth that are originally from Morocco. This has all to do with the fact that Moroccans tend to act agressive if problems occure. The Moroccan youth is always negatively on the news and people often think that every Moroccan is the same as those criminals.

When I tell people that I am originally from Morocco, they assume that I often drink moroccan tea. I don't really agree with this because not every person that's from Morocco drinks the tea every day. However it is a moroccan tradition, this doesn't mean that everyone drinks it every day.

Perhaps for most Iranian this is the most annoying stereotype. A lot of people confuse Iranians people with arabs, they think that another name for an Iranian is an Arab. Also they assume that the language is the same, which is totally different from each other. The reason for Iranians being upset, is that for a Arabs and Iranians have been in many wars with eachother over the past millennium.

To be honest, this stereotype is also true. A lot of people assume that my house is filled with carpets. Which is actually true, my parents brought a lot of carpets from Iran to the Netherlands. Persian carpets are known for their outstanding quality and uniqueness, and that is why they also are very imporant for Iranian people. They often say "the Iranians wealth shines on the floor".

When I tell people that my roots are from Iran, they automatically assume I am some kind of terrorist. They make jokes about how I "could carry a bom in my jacket". I think that people generalize this not only for the Iranian people, but for a lot of middle-east countries. I think that this is because of the political situation that is now going on.

This stereotype is not only for Iranian people, but also for a lot of other Middle-East countries. Whenever I tell people I am from Iran, a lot of times the first thing they say is "Ah, so you got oil". They assume that I have it in my backyard. To be honest I can understand this stereotype. In a lot of Middle-East countries(especially Iran) a major source of income derives from trading oil.

People always assume that I sacrifice a lot for education and it is my #1 priority when I tell them I am from Iran. It is actually true, it is widely known that Iranian people do everything to have a good education. Parents invest a lot of money and time to give their children the best education possible.
