Carving tiles today... The good thing about the start of the year is that I always seem to have a good variety of pieces to work on. I'm enjoying the experimentation and it makes for really exciting kiln openings!
This mixed media ceramic piece has twisted cotton cords stitched through the holes up the side and braided through each other around the top. The braiding process is called "ply-split braiding" using a grip fid tool which is like a cut-off knitting needle that has also been sheered off on the edge to allow one cord to be inserted in the needle so it can be pulled between the plies of the other cord.
